Blue Herons Year-round

Picture
In addition to fish, frogs and lizards, they love moles and gophers for breakfast.  See below, a heron striking down a gopher or mole burrow with its beak!

Picture
Big, regal, and rodent loving, the Great Blue Herons are year-round residents of Lake Buchanan, Inks Lake and the surrounding areas.

Yum! A gopher!

Pelicans pass through in the Spring and Fall

Picture
Brilliant white with black wing-tips this was one of many flocks that we saw in mid-March 2011. The floodgates visible in the background are about 3-1/2 miles across the lake!

Can you identify this little guy?

Picture
This picture was taken in January 2011. These guys love safflower seeds, which squirrels hate!

A new nest - who is moving in?

Picture
12 Feb 2012 - A new nest has been started and this morning three different species showed up acting like they were "house-hunting".   I wonder if they can get a mortgage before fall?  Click here to see each of the prospects.
