Member Spotlight: Llano County Historical Commission

Llano County Historical Commission is a local branch of the Texas Historical Commission. While the Llano County Historical Commission was chartered in the mid-1960s, the modern county historical commission framework was established by Texas state legislation in 1973. This act transformed historical commissions into the permanent, official advisory and preservation commissions that we know today.  

The Llano County Historical Commission is composed of members representing various areas of the county. They meet regularly to plan programs and events that educate the public about the history of Llano and are strong partners with the city of Llano and Llano County to preserve Llano’s history. The Llano County Historical Commission (LCHC) also manages the applications for state and local historical markers across Llano County.   ​

Currently, they are working on a book of Llano County historical homes, set for publication in November to be available for purchase in early December. This beautiful book will capture original photos, current photos and the history of the homes and occupants that are part of the varied past of Llano County. ​Llano County Historical Commission has various educational programs and projects available to the public. They completed a four page brochure on early public schools from 1852-1948 still standing in Llano County. The brochure can be downloaded from their website.

Llano County Historical Commission is an active partner in the upcoming Llano America 250 celebration. They are hosting the kick-off event on July 1st at 5:30 PM, “Born of Rebellion, Inspired by Liberty: The Common Causes of the United States, Texas, and Mexico, presented by Ben Friberg, a proud seventh-generation Texan whose family roots trace back to Stephen F. Austin’s famed original 300. For more than 200 years, his family’s story has been woven into the fabric of Texas history, a legacy first brought to life for him through stories shared by his mother during his childhood. That passion eventually evolved into a successful career in storytelling. Please join us at the Llano Fine Arts Gallery located at 503 Bessemer in Llano. Refreshments can be enjoyed as you listen to Mr. Friberg, as well as during the viewing of patriotic artwork by Fine Art Guild members. Additionally, the Llano County Historical Commission created the commemorative ornament for the Llano America 250!  This beautiful souvenir wooden ornament is a true commemoration of 250 years of American freedom and heritage and the beauty of Llano County.  A patriotic eagle design celebrates 250 years of United States history.  The back showcases one of Llano’s historic cabins and the bluebonnets for which Llano County is renowned.  You can purchase your ornament online - and even have it shipped! - or purchase it in-person at the Llano Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Buchanan/Inks Lake Chamber of Commerce, or at the LCHC booth at the Llano America 250 in the vendor area!!

Llano County Historical Commission also hosts the holiday historic “Dickens Tea” each December as part of A Dickens of a Christmas in Llano. This fun tea is a step back in time and a great excuse to dress up in Victoria wear and amazing hats. LCHC accepts new members on an ongoing basis who have a passion for local Llano history.
