JENNIFER HESS is Buchanan Arts & Crafts's, Artist of the Month. She is a Fine Arts artist and a Licensed Architect. Originally from the Kansas City area, she lived 20 years in the Pacific Northwest, and currently resides in the Highland Lakes area. Jennifer has been involved in art since an early age, starting with pre-school at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City. She enlisted in every art, craft, or drawing class offered in public school, then studied architecture at the University of Kansas, becoming skilled in the art of technical drawing and illustration. Her architectural education included study-abroad summers in Italy and travel throughout parts of Europe, resulting in a lifetime love and appreciation for art, sculpture, and architecture. Jennifer is an active member of Buchanan Arts & Crafts, Inc., located at 17534 E. Highway 29, Buchanan Dam, Texas 78609, where her original works are on display. The Buchanan Arts and Crafts Guild has selected Shirley Muery for Artist of the Month. Shirley and her husband moved from Austin to Sunrise Beach, where they became active in the community. She happened to find a watercolor book at Costco that peeked her interest. She took watercolor lessons from local instructors, which lead her to becoming a member of the Buchanan Arts and Crafts Guild. They offered opportunities to expand into working with acrylic and oil. As her artwork improved and her confidence grew, she starting displaying her paintings in the Gallery. In 2014, she became co-treasurer and still remains in that position today. After her husband passed away in 2017, her love of art, working at the gallery and friendships with other talented members became the highlight of her life. Recently, she became interested in painting abstracts, which she says, "Are not as easy as they look". Her work can be seen at the Gallery, located at 17534 E. Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild is proud to announce that Sue Stamp is our Artist of the Month. She and her husband, Bill, met at college, married and started moving around the country...living in the Adirondack Mountains in New York, the Florida pan handle and Colorado before settling in Buchanan Dam. They live here now, but spend their summers up north. While spending this past summer in Colorado and Minnesota, she entered her oil paintings in their County Fairs and won six first place ribbons. She studied oil painting at the Gallery from Doug Prine and Carla Sanchez, but also paints in pastels and watercolor. Sue says she is "thrilled to be a member of the Guild and is blessed with great friends and teachers." Her work can be seen at Buchanan Arts & Crafts Gallery, 17534 E. Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild/Gallery is proud to have Nancy Mattingly as Artist of the Month. She has been a member since 2005 and has learned to paint in many mediums during that time. Taking lessons from Carla Sanchez in oil, pastels from Lois Nance, watercolor from Betty Bielser, plus many more. Her first love are people and animal portraits in oil and watercolor. Most of her paintings are inspired from photos she takes around the Highland Lakes area.
Being a member of BAC has not only created an accomplished artist but produced a family of artist friends, second only to her personal family. Nancy finds great satisfaction in painting and hopes to continue as long as she is able.

We have selected Don Sharp to become our "Artist of the Months of July and August".
Don Sharp was raised in Odessa before going off to join the USAF in 1967. After his military service was over, he continued his love of piloting airplanes and sailplanes for 40 years. Recently Don took up the challenge of learning to fly RC Airplanes. After 30 years as an insurance executive with US Aircraft Insurance, Inc., Don retired, and with his wife, Mary, moved to Buchanan Lake Village in Tow. They pursued their love of arts and crafts by joining Buchanan Arts and Crafts, where Don displays his beautifully crafted gourds. Since then, Don took lessons in oil from Carla Sanchez and says, "I could not have progressed the way I have without the guidance, association and lessons taken at Buchanan Arts and Crafts". Artist of the Month, Maridell Henry, started painting in the San Francisco Bay area in 1985, where she hosted a group of artists in her home every Tuesday. They were taught techniques of oil painting from Vickie Wescott. After moving to Kingsland, Maridell joined Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild in 1993 and continued taking workshops from several well known artists like, Doug Prine, Kay Walton, Larry Prellop and others. Since then, she has been an active member, selling her paintings and inspiring new members to be creative thought painting. Her work is on display at Buchanan Arts & Crafts Gallery, Wed.-Saturday from 10- 4:00 and Sunday from 1-5:00, located at 17534 E. SH 29 in downtown Buchanan Dam.
Jennifer Hess has been selected 'Artist of the Month' at Buchanan Arts & Craft, Inc. Jennifer came to reside in the Highland Lakes area by way of Kansas and the Pacific Northwest. She is an excellent Fine Arts artist, primarily self-taught, taking every art class offered in public school, got her degree in architecture from University of Kansas. She became an expert in technical drawing, illustration, and computer drawing (CAD) as part of her architectural training. She spent her summers abroad in Italy and throughout Europe, developing her love and appreciation for all the arts. Lately her focus has been on Oil painting but she also works in Watercolor, Acrylic, Pastel, Charcoal, Pencil, Pen and Ink. Her originals are on display at Buchanan Arts & Crafts Gallery, where you can also see the newly remodeled Gift Shop, which Jennifer designed. BAC Gallery is located at 17534 E. Katie Do, chosen Artist of the Month of December at Buchanan Arts & Crafts, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana she has lived in Texas most of her life. At the age of 8 she received her first camera, which began a lifelong love of photography, an interest that has continually evolved with the advent of the digital camera. She later developed an interest in making jewelry, which led to becoming a silversmith and a glass bead artist in order to construct the sterling silver and glass bead pieces she enjoys making. Her love of art has led to painting in oils, watercolor and acrylics. She is mainly a self-taught artist who has taken watercolor classes with Dee Phillips of Austin and Betty Bielser of Buchanan Dam. She has studied oils with Doug Pine and Carla Sanchez.
Katie is a past member of the Gulf Coast Craftsman's Guild, the Biloxi Art Association, and the Waterloo Watercolor Association. She is now a member of Buchanan Arts and Crafts Gallery, 17534 E. Dana Parkinson joined Buchanan Arts and Crafts Gallery in 2010. She attended Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts majoring in Graphic Design. Her first job was with J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency in New York City. This gave her the foundation for a twenty year creative design career. After moving to Kingsland, TX in 2003, Dana focused on fine art painting. She was commissioned by PBR (Professional Bull Riders) to paint six famous bucking bulls, and currently enjoys portraiture in oil, especially dog portraits. Mostly, she enjoys the friendship and talent of other artists, especially at the gallery. Dana currently serves as chairman of the board. Her artwork can be seen at Buchanan Arts and Crafts. 17534 E. Hwy 29. Buchanan Dam.

March 2018 Artist of the Month:
Mary Elizabeth Sharp was selected as Artist of the Month for March, at Buchanan Arts & Crafts. Mary grew up loving art and learned to paint in several mediums while attending Odessa High School. After graduating, she started her career with Continental Airlines, followed by 25 years as a travel agent, which gave her many opportunities to travel the world, gathering artistic images. Also during that time, she and husband, Don, raised their children. Now, they are retired and living in Tow, TX. Both became members of Buchanan Arts & Crafts. Don creates artistic gourds and Mary is currently focused on learning to paint flowers in oil on canvas during a class Carla Sanchez teaches every Friday at BAC. Mary's work is on display at 17534 E.
