Eagles
The Llano River eagles nest that was on the side of Hwy 29 between Buchanan Dam and Llano fell during a storm in August of 2014. The tree was old and hollowed and had been supporting a nest that weighed over 800 pounds. The eagles added to the nest each year making it increasingly more difficult for the tree. This was the third nest for this pair of eagles in 14 years. The Llano River eagles are still near the same location along the river but have built their fourth nest beyond the view from the road.
According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife 2014 Eagle Count there were 15 pairs of Bald Eagles and 2 pairs of Golden Eagles wintering in the canyons above Lake Buchanan on the Colorado River. The bald eagles visit the area generally from November to February.
With great appreciation virtually all the pictures of the Llano River eagles on this website were taken and donated by Jim Baines. You can see more of his photography posted here. Thank you Jim.

Llano River Eagles 2013-2014

The Eagles came early in 2013; they were spotted at the nest Sept 18, 2013 by Texas Parks and Wildlife. They usually do not arrive until November. At this early point there is no sign that she has laid her eggs, the pair have both been busy remodeling the nest and scouting the Llano River. The river is up from all the latest rain and the fish seem to be plentiful. Please Click Here for a photo gallery or Click Here for a slideshow, both of which are posted by our friend and photographer Jim Baines.
